NEW REPORT: Clean Energy Generates Over $135 Million in Revenue for Illinois Communities

WASHINGTON / DES MOINES, May 28

A new report finds Illinois is fifth in the nation for operating wind and solar energy, reaping significant economic and environmental benefits for the state. Clean Energy Powers Illinois, a report published by the American Clean Power Association (ACP), finds 14% of electricity in the state is provided by wind and solar, with that share poised to grow through 2030.

“Clean energy projects generate $135 million annually for Illinois' communities through land-lease and tax payments. This revenue helps build a resilient economy by bridging budget shortfalls and creating stable jobs in construction, development, operations, and manufacturing,” ACP Director, Midwestern State Affairs, Erika Kowall.

The private sector has invested $18 billion in the state's utility-scale solar, wind, and storage projects. Illinois also hosts 33 operating clean energy manufacturing facilities. The clean energy economy created by these projects supports jobs for over 16,000 Illinoisans.

Report Highlights:

  • In the last six months alone, more than 4,300 megawatts of utility-scale clean capacity have begun development—enough to power the equivalent of over 6 million homes in Illinois.
  • In total, solar, wind, and storage provide 16,300 jobs to Illinoisans, driving economic growth in the state.
  • By 2030, Illinois anticipates adding 4,500 megawatts of solar, 5,400 megawatts of land-based wind power, and 3,800 megawatts of battery storage to its grid.
  • This projected clean energy capacity represents a near 150% increase in total clean power by 2030, with an expected $15 billion in capital investment.
  • The increased clean energy activity will spur job growth, increase estimated tax payments to $200 million annually, and generate $183 million in annual land lease payments.
