NEW REPORT: Clean Energy Generates $78 Million in Yearly Revenue for Arizona Communities

PHOENIX, June 17

A new report finds $13 billion has been invested in utility-scale solar, wind, and energy storage projects in Arizona, helping drive economic growth in the state. Clean Energy Powers Arizona, a report published by the American Clean Power Association (ACP), shows that 12% of electricity in the state is provided by wind and solar. Clean energy investment is poised to grow through 2030 as the state’s booming population and businesses demand more American-produced power.

“Clean energy projects inject $78 million each year into Arizona communities through land-lease and tax payments. These funds strengthen the local economy and provide consistent employment in the construction, development, operations, and manufacturing sectors,” said ACP Director of Western State Affairs Bo Downen. “As the state’s population grows, meeting the increase in demand for electricity will greatly benefit from a diversified grid which includes increasing clean power capacity—a resource abundant in a state with so much sunshine.”

Arizona’s total clean energy capacity stood at 5,500 megawatts (MW), with 8,700 MW more under development.* That ranks the state as 14th in the nation for the amount of wind and solar online and is enough clean electricity to power 870,000 homes—roughly equivalent to powering all the homes in Tucson four times over. Arizona also hosts eight clean energy manufacturing facilities already in operation, with six additional facilities announced for the state.  Nearly 10,000 Arizonans now work in the clean energy economy.

Report Highlights:

  • There are 8,700 MW of utility-scale clean power capacity under development in Arizona.*
  • In total, solar, wind, and storage provide 9,900 jobs to Arizonans, driving employment and economic growth in the state.
  • Arizona is a clean energy pioneer: the state is third in the nation for both the amount of energy storage capacity online (1,000 MW) and for amount of storage capacity in the pipeline (3,700 MW).
  • By 2030, Arizona anticipates adding 7,600 MW of utility-scale solar power, 1,700 MW of wind power, and 5,900 MW of battery storage—or enough clean electricity to power the equivalent of over 5 million homes.
  • This projected clean energy capacity represents a 276% increase in total clean power, with $14 billion in capital investment expected.
  • By 2030, the increased clean energy activity will spur job growth, increase estimated state tax revenue to $180 million annually and generate $185 million in annual land lease payments.
