ACP Releases New North Carolina Clean Energy Data

Washington DC, August 22 – Today, the American Clean Power Association released new clean energy data for North Carolina, revealing that the Tar Heel State ranks ninth nationally in clean energy generation. With nearly $16 billion invested in North Carolina’s clean energy sector, the state’s total clean energy capacity stands at nearly 6,877 megawatts (MW), enough energy to power 1.2 million homes.

“North Carolina is an established leader in clean energy deployment in the Southeast, and ranks fourth nationally in installed solar capacity,” said ACP Director of Southeast State Affairs, Wade Giltz. “The state is a key power producer adding more American made energy to meet growing demand, which is also creating jobs and stimulating economic growth across North Carolina.”

Investments in wind, solar and energy storage projects alone have created more than 9,600 jobs in North Carolina, and that number is expected to grow.

The state’s clean energy projects also generate critical tax and land lease revenue that help bridge budget shortfalls and allow communities to plan and invest in their future. The over $70 million generated annually provides new income to repair roads, invest in schools and fund essential services.

By 2030, North Carolina anticipates:

  • Adding 10,100 MW of utility solar, 1,400 MW of land-based wind power, 900 MW of battery storage.
  • This represents a near doubling of utility-scale clean power investment by 2030, with more than $14 billion in capital investment expected.
  • This activity will spur job growth, increase estimated tax payments to nearly $103 million annually, and generate over $134 million in annual land lease payments.
