American Clean Power Awards Michigan Clean Energy Champions

Dearborn, MI – This afternoon, the American Clean Power Association (ACP) honored Michigan State Senator Sam Singh and Representatives Abraham Aiyash and Ranjeev Puri as Clean Energy Champions at a celebratory luncheon for leading landmark bills to help Michigan become a national leader in clean energy. Thanks to their leadership, Michigan has generated substantial tax revenue for rural communities and improved the state’s renewable energy portfolio.

“Michigan is a clean energy leader, showing the rest of the country how to enhance national and energy security by supporting more American-made energy,” said ACP CEO Jason Grumet. “The state is positioned to benefit from the valuable new jobs, tax revenue, and ongoing investment that renewable energy brings. It is a great pleasure to acknowledge Senator Singh and Representatives Aiyash and Puri and the example they have set for the nation.”

Earlier this week, ACP released a new report highlighting the contributions made in Michigan from utility-scale clean energy projects. The Clean Energy Powers Michigan report revealed that Michigan’s total clean energy capacity of 4.7 gigawatts is enough electricity to power more than 1.8 million homes.

"On behalf of ACP and its members, I applaud Representatives Abraham Aiyash and Ranjeev Puri, as well as Senator Sam Singh, for their exceptional leadership," said Bernerd Da Santos, AES Executive Vice President and President of Renewables. "Their commitment to providing Michigan with clean, reliable energy sources has been instrumental in creating new economic opportunities and well-paying jobs. These innovative policies will ensure a brighter, more sustainable future for all Michiganders."

Building on the momentum of legislation passed last year, billions more in investments are projected by 2030. Michigan report highlights include:

  • $8 Billion – Today’s total private sector investment in Michigan’s utility-scale solar, wind, and storage projects.
  • $10 Billion – The expected private sector investment through clean energy projects that will support Michigan’s clean energy economy by 2030.
  • $50 Million – The amount paid annually through Michigan land lease payments.
  • $65 Million – The annual investment in local and state taxes paid by the industry.
  • More than 11,000 Michigan jobs are supported by the clean energy industry.

“Michigan is poised for major growth in the renewable energy sector, driven in large part by its strong policy environment,” said Ken Young, CEO of Apex Clean Energy. “Through the development and operation of multiple wind, solar, and battery energy storage projects, Apex is well-positioned to help the state meet its aggressive clean energy goals. Together, these projects will deliver significant new investment and job creation into communities across the state.”
